Who We Are

We’re probably one of the most straightforward give-back companies you’ll ever meet — does a product name get any more direct than “This Bar Saves Lives?” It’s simple: for every bar you buy, we give a packet of life-saving food to a child in need. Buy a bar. Feed a child. We eat together.

The Idea

Our reliance on our partner organizations is clear — without them and their dedicated team of workers and volunteers, our company could not exist as it does today. After working with our giving partners for over a year, we decided that it was high time we did something to thank the people who keep our company’s philanthropic mission alive. But just a Tweet or blog post wasn’t going to cut it. We knew that we had to go BIG with our expression of gratitude.

The Partnerships

In a digital age, where nearly everything has a shelf life measured in seconds, we decided that putting pen to paper — real actual paper! — would be an impactful way to physically connect with our incredible partners around the world. When was the last time you wrote a letter? For us, it had been a long time. Our hands cramped up after writing three of them! Fortunately, there’s a whole community out there keeping the art of letter writing alive. More Love Letters is an organization that calls upon anyone and everyone to hand craft love letters to send to people around the world. How amazing is that?!

We work with a variety of incredible non-profits to deliver aid all over the world, and for this campaign we decided to focus on Timmy Global Health, our newest giving partner. Our partnership with Timmy ensures that the food aid we give is distributed responsibly and efficiently to various areas in Central America Not only did we want to thank them for their amazing work, we wanted to honor our give-back model and do a little more. So we reached out to the More Love Letters community and pledged to give a packet of life-saving food for each letter written to the heroes at Timmy Global Health.

The Heroes

We decided to focus on a few of Timmy’s aid workers and really blow them away with an outpouring of love. We’re talking hundreds of letters! Here are the unsung heroes we honored:

Ruth, a Community Health Promoter in the Ecuadorian Amazon Basin. She ensures that the families in the rural village of Jatun Yaku receive quality health care; educates the community about preventative health care; and serves as the link between the community and the Ecuadorian healthcare system.

The Grefa family, based in the Amazon Basin in Ecuador. They are community leaders who generously allow their home to be turned into a medical clinic every 2 months, welcoming medical teams from Timmy Global Health

Marielena is a nurse in Quito, Ecuador who works with the Community Health Promoter program and Mobile Medical Unit. She helps provide financial support services to low-income patients, bringing healthcare, education, and hope to a rural community.

Doctor Carmen Rosa, a physician based in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. As the Medical Coordinator of Nutrition & Referral Programs, she helps provide healthcare services to thousands of underserved patients. She also leads the Timmy Global Health & Pop-Wuj Nutrition Program dedicated to improving nutrition and health for mothers and babies.

Miguel, the Medical Director of the Preventive Medicine program at the BANELINO banana cooperative in Monte Cristi, in the Dominican Republic. He runs a mobile medical practice, traveling to rural communities to provide primary care services

The Letters

After weeks of planning, our newest campaign was finally ready to start. On World Food Day, October 16th, 2014, we officially launched “This Letter Saves Lives.” We, Timmy Global Health, and More Love Letters all called upon our communities to write love letters thanking our 5 heroes for their selfless work. We used our social media channels to regularly promote the campaign. We even hosted our first Twitterchat to speak with our followers in real time about This Letter Saves Lives. We received letters every day for an entire month. Truly an incredible outpouring of support from our community.

The Results

The participation in our campaign was inspiring. We received 1,635 love letters from around the country, which meant that every single one of the 5 recipients was surprised with hundreds of letters.

Our life-saving letter campaign was a huge success. With each one of the hundreds of letters that surprised our Timmy Global Health heroes, we donated a packet of life-saving food to a child in need. That means we gave more than 1,600 packets of aid to children all around the world.

What’s Next
First of all, we want to thank everyone who participated in the This Letter Saves Lives campaign. Your love letters meant a lot to everyone who received them — as you can tell from their reactions above! Since This Letter Saves Lives officially wrapped, we have already started brainstorming ideas for our next innovative campaign. We still have plenty of other giving partners who we plan on thanking in a big way in the near future. How? Well, you’ll just have to stay tuned to find out.
